Uniforms

The official dress code of Father Leo J. Austin Catholic Secondary School is a result of discussion with faculty, students, parent council and administration. Our school uniform is compulsory. All students are to wear the uniform during the school day. The school colours are black, red and grey.  

Headwear is under review pending consultation with the DCDSB and stakeholders.

 All Dress Code infractions will be addressed with discretion and respect. 

Students can purchase their uniform at McCarthy School Uniforms or at our annual used school uniform sales.

All families, especially families of incoming Grade 9 students are asked to register with McCarthy Uniforms at www.mccarthyuniforms.ca.  

Winter Uniform is in effect from November 1 to March 31

Summer Uniform is in effect from April 1 to October 31 with McCarthy issued shorts permitted beginning May 1.

School Uniform 

Students are required to wear the uniform properly. The uniform will be kept clean and in good repair and worn neatly. Uniform clothing needs to be sized appropriately: neither too large nor immodestly tight. 

The following items of the uniform must meet specific requirements.

 

Items of the uniformRequirements

Kilt

Grey, black, red plaid kilt - (McCarthy's label only) with solid black or white knee socks/tights. The kilt must be properly hemmed and cannot be worn more than 10cm from the middle of the kneecap. Failure to wear the kilt, as specified, may result in the loss of privilege to wear this uniform item; pants only will be allowed for the remainder of the semester.

Dress Pants

Charcoal grey pants (McCarthy's issued only). Pants must be worn around the waist and the waist band is not to be rolled and open.

Hosiery/Socks

Black, white or grey socks may be worn with kilts, pants or shorts.  Solid black tights or black leggings with black socks may be worn with the kilt.  Patterned tights, pantyhose or sheer tights are not permitted.

Foot Wear

Only low cut, solid black shoes are acceptable. No other colour or design shall be on the shoe. Laces must be black and plain. The shoes must have a full back and closed toe. Boots, sandals, flip-flops, clogs and other styles of slip on shoes are not permitted. For safety reasons, shoes must be worn at all times in the building, including lunchtime. Please inquire, with the administration, if there is any question about the appropriateness of footwear PRIOR to making a purchase.

First Layer Shirt

Only McCarthy's Father Leo J. Austin Catholic Secondary School embroidered logo white or black long or short-sleeved golf shirt may be worn.  The first layer is optional ONLY under the McCarthy issued black 1/4 zip polo or v-neck pullover.  It must be worn under the McCarthy issued full zip cardigan.

Second Layer Sweater

Only McCarthy's black 1/4 zip polo, v-neck pullover, full zip cardigan, all embroidered may be worn. Students may remove their second layer while in the classroom with teacher's permission.  However, second layers must be worn while in the hallways and cafeteria.

No undergarment may extend below the waistline of the sweater or shirt.

 

Items that Can be Worn with the Uniform 

The following items may be worn with a student's uniform.

  • Belts: If belts are worn they must be plain and black. No distracting or offensive buckles are
        permitted. No other makeshift belts are permitted (shoe laces etc).
  • Jewelry: Must be neat, respectable and inoffensive. No spiked or studded bracelets, necklaces and earrings
        are permitted.
  • Undershirts: Only short-sleeved PLAIN WHITE t-shirts are permitted under the school shirt. Plain means
        "without any decoration or text." The length of the sleeve of the undershirt must not exceed the length of the
         sleeve of uniform shirt.
 
Items that Cannot be Worn with the Uniform 

The following items may not be worn with the school's uniform.

  • Bandanas: Bandanas are prohibited and will be confiscated if seen. Parents may come to the school to
        retrieve the item. No wide headbands are permitted.
  • Hats: Hats and hooded sweaters may not be worn in the school building from time of arrival for the school
        day to time of departure. No athletic hoodies or club hoodies are to be worn unless permission has been
        given.
  • Outer Clothing: Students must remove outer clothing as soon as possible after arrival to school, and put
        outer clothing on as late as possible when about to depart from school. Outer clothing must be stored in the
        locker, not taken to classrooms.

 

Administration reserves the right to determine the appropriateness of all non-school uniform items.

 
Summer Uniform 

The summer uniform is in effect from April 1 to October 31.

Uniform requirements are the same as those in place for the winter uniform with the exception of the following:

  • The second layer is not mandatory in classrooms and hallways.  The first layer white or black (McCarthy issued) golf shirt embroidered with Father Leo J. Austin Catholic Secondary School logo must be worn.  This first layer is only optional if the student is wearing the McCarthy's 1/4 zip polo or the McCarthy's v-neck pullover.
  • McCarthy's issued black shorts maybe worn beginning May 1st
Spirit Days
Throughout the school year, students will be allowed to share their school spirit by wearing a Father Leo J. Austin Catholic Secondary School sweater, jersey, hoodie or logo item in place of a second layer. Only Father Leo J. Austin Catholic Secondary School items will be allowed on these spirit wear days. 
Non-Uniform Days 

Non-Uniform days at Father Leo J. Austin Catholic Secondary School are a privilege for our students.  In keeping with the values of self-respect and respect for others, students must wear clothes that DO NOT display scenes or words of violence, sex, alcohol, drugs, or with racist overtones.  Any non-uniform apparel is subject to administrative approval.

On non-uniform days students must be dressed in clothing appropriate for a Catholic Secondary school. Parent and guardians will be contacted and students may be sent home if dressed inappropriately. Shorts will not be permitted before May 1. There will be a cost associated with each non-uniform day with the proceeds going to charity. 

Specific to the code, students must always dress appropriately for a Catholic Secondary School.  In order to assist with the above definition, the following specifics ARE NOT acceptable, including, but not limited to:

  • Short-shorts and/or very short summer skirts or dresses
  • Pants worn below the waist
  • Bare mid-rifts, Low cut-blouses/shirts
  • Extra-thin strapped blouses/dresses
  • Muscle Shirts
  • Pajama Pants
